Johnson Praises Wesolowski

Johnson Praises Wesolowski

Manager Lee Johnson has praised the performance and winning goal from midfielder James Wesolowski following our win over Stevenage.

The player scored what turned out to be the winner in the 13th minute, and it was his first league strike since 2011, but more importantly for Oldham the three points pull us further away from the bottom of the table.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the game, Johnson said.

'This is a big win for us and James was fantastic. He was excellent last week at Liverpool and you can see what a difference he makes.'

Adding that it's not just his driving force in the middle of the park, it's all the hard work he puts in to breaking up the play of the opposition and the tackles he puts in, and Johnson believes that over the course of the season so far he has really improved technically and he thought he was excellent value for his Man of the Match recognition.

As for the game itself, that didn't quite carry the praise that Wesolowski did as the gaffer says that overall it 'wasn't a great performance' and we certainly weren't free flowing, but sometimes it is all about the points on offer and we maximised them despite that.

Saying it was obviously a must win game for us and he feels that edginess certainly affected our play, but we did show our quality in points, but he'd have been far happier had we done that more consistently.

Another pleasing thing for the gaffer is that we kept another clean sheet in the game, as that is one thing we have really lacked this season, so he feels now that with the games in hand we have, we are looking more comfortable and the players can grow in confidence because of the breathing space we have over the bottom places.

Hopefully for Johnson that breathing space, will see us improve our overall performance levels as well.
