Johnson - Late Sucker Punch Was Disappointing
Manager Lee Johnson has said he was desperately disappointed to see Oldham concede the late goal against Crewe as it cost us a justified extra two points from the game on Saturday.
Oldham took the second half lead through Gary Harkins within ten minutes of the restart and although they edged possession, we had the greater chances on and off target and we really should've increased our lead to enjoy a calmer end to the game.
Speaking to the Official Site following the one all draw, Johnson explained.
'It was disappointing not to get the three points because I thought the lads were quality. We were very strong, compact and powerful on the break. I thought we deserved to win. We frustrated them, gradually took over the game and had three or four chances that we should have finished off but we didn't.'
Johnson admits again that it wasn't the prettiest of games really because the pitch was heavy, so he was proud and pleased with the work ethic of the team to keep plugging away, but losing the two points in the way we did he can only describe as being a 'sucker punch' and he knows we were well under the cosh in injury time as they kept launching it and unfortunately we just couldn't hold on.
As for the goal scorer Harkins, Johnson said he felt he was 'excellent all game' and could've taken his tally to six goals since joining us back in January had he had a slice more luck with a second chance, and Harkis wasn't alone as the gaffer says he felt 'five or six out there were superb' and he really does feel sorry for them that their efforts haven't come out with three points.
We also had Joel Byrom making his debut following his loan deal, and Johnson was pleased with what he brought to the table for us as he felt he slotted in nicely and really contributed.
