Cup Final Mentality For Season Opener

Manager Lee Johnson has said that he wants the Oldham team to go into the season opener against Colchester United with a 'cup final mentality' to ensure we make the most of our first opportunity for a meaningful win and three points.

Having made eight additions to the side over the summer, Oldham go into our 18th successive season at this level and Johnson would like nothing more than to bring that to an end by having a really good run for promotion this season, and of course our pre season exploits - having lost only once to Romanian Champions Steaua Bucharest - have certainly given us a confidence boost in that regard, but speaking to the Official Site he knows that early optimism won't count for a lot unless we back it up in a game that matters.

'It's been a long time coming and it's took a lot of preparation. It was a bit of a lengthy pre season because we brought them in ten days earlier but we feel ready and organised and everybody is excited. You can forget the pre season form and fixtures because now we are into the big stuff and we are looking forward to it.'

Johnson goes on to say that 'expectations should always' start high as a season nears because unless you aim high what's the point, but the whole club is excited about our potential going into 2014-15 and he'd love us to meet those expectations.

With that said, Johnson also added that he was expecting a very tough and good game from our opponents Colchester, as they generally start well themselves and we've done our due dilligence on them, and know what to expect following last year's clashes anyway, but the trick for us is in not coming out of the game disappointed.

With the season about to start it also means the nearing of the close of the transfer window, and whilst he wouldn't rule out any further additions he did say that nothing was bubbling at the moment so fans shouldn't expect anything just yet.
