Oldham made another first round exit from the Carling Cup by going down 4-2 on penalties to Carlisle after a 1-1 draw.
Carlisle keeper Adam Collin proved to be the hero for the visitors after saving two of Oldham`s spot kicks from Chris Taylor and Josh Parker.
It was Oldham who took the lead midway through the first half, ironically from the penalty spot. Dean Furman went down in the area after a challenge from Liam Noble and Reuben Reid made no mistake from twelve yards.
The visitors had more of the play in the second half and they managed to pull level just before the hour mark when Jon-Paul McGovern curled in a free kick from 25 yards.
After that either side could have added to the score sheet, Craig Curran`s shot went inches wide of goal for Carlisle and as normal time came to an end, Smith put a header against the bar while at the other end Taiwo hit the post.
The game went into extra time and Smith once again hit the bar with a header.
