Relief As Latics Win

There was a sigh of relief among the Oldham fans last night as Paul Dickovs men recorded their first win of the season against Scunthorpe at Glanford Park on Tuesday.

Matt Smith scored what proved to be the winner when he headed home in the 83rd minute, it gave the visitors a 2-1 victory that saw them clime off the bottom of the table.

Earlier Scunthorpe were left cursing their luck when Garry Thompson saw an effort hit the underside of the bar, soon after, David Mellor put the visitors in front when he fired home just after the quarter hour.

And it could have got worse for the home side early in the second half when Chris Taylor narrowly put the ball wide.

Scunthorpe then became more involved in the game and it was no surprise when they equalised in the 64th minute with a very nice solo effort from Chris Dagnall.

Then Oldham`s luck held out when Mark Duffy had a shot that hit the inside of the post but somehow stayed out.

The visitors then took advantage of their good fortune by taking the lead again when Smith simply got up the highest to head home a free kick

The home side continued to press forward and Mark Duffy was unlucky with a shot that hit the inside of the post but stayed out.

And with the game in stoppage time, Oldham rode their luck once again when sub Bobby Grant saw his effort smash against the cross bar.

Oldham finished with 10 men when centre-back Jean-Yves Mvoto picked up a second yellow card.
